That new deck smell!

Let’s face it, a deck is a great way to spend some time in the beautiful Minnesota spring, summer, and early fall. But if we are being honest with ourselves, we don’t want to have to think about maintaining the deck. In comes the “maintenance free” decking products. Trex, Azek, and TimberTech composite and PVC decking along with aluminum railings. The colors and styles can be mesmerizing and awe inspiring. However, if you have done any research or have gotten an estimate on one recently, you were probably shocked by the cost. So let’s dive in for a few moments on the love of our outdoor spaces and the costs involved.

The winter of 2023/2024 will probably be in the history books for a while. Here in Minnesota we were able to spend so much time outside. It was glorious. I’m sure like me, most of you were thinking about your outdoor spaces most of the winter. And rightfully so. With only being able to spend 5-6 months outside in Minnesota a year, we want to capitalize on our spaces. So having a deck to spend time having dinners, relaxing with a book, or just soaking in the sun becomes a necessity. For good reason, as the sun is a great source of Vitamin D which has so many benefits to our bodies and minds.

When it comes to the cost of constructing a deck, there are quite a few factors to consider. The type of decking can be daunting. There are many brands on the market. However, three of them stand out the most. Wood decks are still a good option although it does pull away from the “maintenance free” concept. But still a great option. Wood is also the most economical choice, but staining and maintenance costs over the years need to be calculated into the project. Composite decking and pvc decking are the leaders in “maintenance free”. With a much greater upfront cost, Trex and TimberTech by Azek are definitely the leaders here. Each of them has a good, better, and best line with multiple colors. Costs follow suit with each line. So whatever your preference is, there is something for you. Run down to your local Home Depot and check out their sample section for yourself. The larger cost of composite and pvc will allow you to enjoy your deck for years without ever having to think about maintaining it. A very simple way to keep your decking looking brand new longer, a simple wash with a garden hose is all it takes.

Similar to decking, railings are again filled with many options. From standard wood railings and aluminum spindles to composite to all aluminum to cables to glass, the options sometimes feel endless. Costs again fluctuate depending on your preference.

Due to the rise in material prices since Covid in 2020, decks can become an expensive extension of your home. On average, if you choose to build a new 14’ x 16’ deck with composite decking, aluminum railings and spindles and no stairs you can be anywhere from $22,000 to $30,000. If you have an existing deck that needs to be torn down or rebuilt you can expect another $2,000 to $3,000 in additional labor, material, and disposal costs.

When deciding to do a deck, a large portion of the decision is cost. But I want to explore for a moment the emotional part of the decision. Adding on that deck, or rebuilding it gives you the space to enjoy outside. A place for the kids to be outside while staying in earshot of mom or dad. A spot to create memories with your neighbors and friends. Being the one in the neighborhood with a nice new deck isn’t a bad thing either!
